Morocco (Arabic: المغرب al-Maġrib, ‘the country of the West’ or ‘donde the sun sets’; in Berber: ⵎⵓⵔⴰⴽⵓⵛ Murakuč ‘the land of God’; ) – officially called the Kingdom of Morocco (in Berber: ⵜⴰⴳⵍⴷⵉⵜ ⵏ ⵎⵓⵔⴰⴽⵓⵛ Tageldit-n-Murakuč; in Arabic: المملكة المغربية al-Mamlaka al-Maġribiyya)- is a sovereign country located in the Maghreb, to the north of Africa, with coasts on the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.

Is separate from the European continent by the strait of Gibraltar. Limits with: Algeria in the east (the border with Algeria is closed since 1994), to the west with the Western Sahara (contested territory) to the north of Spain, its main trading partner with which it shares both maritime boundaries and land (Ceuta and Melilla, and the rock of Vélez of La Gomera) and finally, to the south by Mauritania. There are also other Spanish enclaves on the Mediterranean coast (Rock of Al Hoceima and Chafarinas Islands). Morocco is attributed to its territory the territory of Western Sahara, former Spanish colony, occupied in 1975 by Moroccan population, following the Madrid Accords and the subsequent waiver of rights and obligations – Spanish although nowadays the Organization of the United Nations does not recognize any right over the territory, considering still territory of Spanish sovereignty not autonomous by decolonize

It is the only African country which is not currently a member of the African Union (AU). In 1984 the General Assembly of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), instance, predecessor of the AU and of which Morocco was a founding member, accepted as a member of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).9 As a response, Morocco withdrew from the organization. Is a member of the Arab League, the Arab Maghreb Union, la Francophonie, the Organization of the Islamic Conference, the Union for the Mediterranean, the European Broadcasting Union, the Group of 77 and the North-South Center. It is also a major non-NATO ally of the United States.
